What is school reentry, and why does it matter?
Nov 3, 2026 · Second Bell
"Reentry" is a student's return to school after an inpatient medical or psychiatric hospitalization, partial hospitalization or intensive outpatient treatment, or another significant health event that caused an extended absence (usually 7+ days) or required temporary accommodations.
Why it matters
The days after a student returns are often the most fragile. Missed work piles up, peers have questions, and routines have changed. Without a plan, students can fall behind academically or feel isolated — which can undo the progress they made in treatment.
What good reentry looks like
A coordinated meeting before or on the first day back, a clear point person, realistic make-up work expectations, temporary accommodations where needed, and scheduled check-ins over the following weeks.
