How teachers can support a returning student without singling them out

Keep it private
Check in one-on-one, not in front of the class. A simple "glad you're back — let's find a time to talk about catching up" is enough.
Prioritize, don't pile on
Identify the essential assignments and excuse or condense the rest. Students returning from treatment shouldn't face weeks of make-up work at once.
Keep routines predictable
Clear expectations and consistent structure help students rebuild confidence. Coordinate with the counselor so the student isn't receiving mixed messages.
